Yeah, I probably could have told you that. Right on the fringes of Democrat and Socialist, but leaning towards the latter. In all honesty I think you probably could call me a socialist, though I certainly plan on registering Democrat. I do believe in economic freedom and all that, but only when you aren't hurting anyone by it. And I usually support government intervention in economics if someone is getting hurt. I also decidedly support universal, national health coverage, though I'm not about to stop people from buying themselves a private plan they prefer.
As for the social part, same beliefs hold. Do whatever the hell you want as long as you're not hurting anyone else, and being offended does not equal being hurt. What happens in private should stay that way unless someone is or is going to be harmed, in which case the government better get their arses in there and do something about it.
In all honesty, I think I am very willing to listen to both sides of issues. I'm constantly reevaluating my own beliefs, to make sure I haven't settled into simply following someone else's train of thought.
And another ickle rant that I'm LJ-cutting because it's... well, if you get offended over religious issues easily then don't click, and don't hold this against me if you do click and get offended. It's merely my opinion.
I'm getting really, really sick of all the debate over "religion in the schools." The current evolution debates are patently ridiculous. You want to believe in creationism... go ahead. I don't care. You're convinced that there is no such thing as evolution? Well, to tell the truth I've lost respect for the scientific part of your intelligence, thought notice I said "scientific part" and not you as a human being. Still, much as I totally and completely disagree with you, go ahead and believe what you will. However do not try to pass it off as science.
Science isn't the be-all end-all of knowledge -I'm a future English major, believe me when I say I understand that. However, we aren't teaching theology class, nor are we teaching postulations on higher powers and the universe, we are teaching science. Trying to teach Creationism in a science class is like trying to teach creative writing in a math class. Algebra certainly doesn't give you all you need to know to analyze a situation, but that doesn't mean you should start teaching kids how to find the symbolism behind word problems.
As for prayer in school, this is an issue where I just need to shake my head at the sheer idiocy sometimes. NO ONE is forcing you not to pray at school. NO ONE is physically holding your hands apart so that you can't do it. (And would it even stop you if they did?) NO ONE is taking away your bibles and replacing them with a copy of the Communist Manifesto. I see things all the time about how kids "wish they could pray in school." You know what? You want to pray in school, then bloody do it! I do it! Sometimes, if I feel the urge, I will fold my hands quietly and think a quick prayer. It's not actually that hard, and I've never actually been forcibly made to revoke said prayer.
Hell, my school has a bible study group that meets once a week at lunch, and I've NEVER heard a single damn complaint about it. And this is in a highly Jewish and liberal neighborhood.
The problem comes when schools are forcing children to pray. Or when a religion is so widely acknowledged at a school that anyone who does not share the exact same beliefs feels ostracized. And it's not just non-christians who feel this way. I've lost count of the number of times I've looked down upon or pressured to conform by other Christians because my view of Christianity is different from theirs. You can be oppressed by members of the same religion, believe me, I've felt it.
Anyway, there's my rant for the day. Argh, this is such a disgustingly busy week. I'm slightly afraid I'm going to be crushed under loads of papers and books. If you hear a slight scream in the distance it's probably me being smashed by Calculus or something. :P
